I miss Japan. I spent over 4 years there in my formative years ridden with adolescent angst. I moved to Tokyo after finishing 8th grade in Chatham, Ontario. My fashion bible at the time was the movie, Clueless. My wardrobe mimicked Cher’s - thigh high stockings, black patent Mary Janes, mini backpacks and plaid skirts. Oh the shame! When I got to Tokyo, my classmates had purple hair, wore baggy ass second hand jeans and looked perpetually morose. Their discmans were on repeat with the likes of Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam. Enter Japanese morose makeover. My teenage years were spent living in downtown Tokyo, my weekends in Shibuya, Harajuku, Shimokitazawa, Shinjuku, and Kichijoji. Needless to say, Nippon fashion continues to influence MY taste in fashion.
I grew to love the goth lolitas, kyogals, and ganguros. Can’t get enough of them and I miss them so.
Sometimes when I’m itching for a Tokyo street fashion fix, I’ll splurge and spend 25 bucks on a Japanese fashion magazine. This is a page out of Vivi that I bought in August. Question - harem pants? Yes or no? I know they are circa 1990 MC Hammeresque but I’m likin it mixed with the rocker 80’s chic thing. May purchase soon.
